Kristen Koppers for Regional Superintendent of Schools
Last night I was honored to speak at the Kendall County Republican Central Committee in Bristol, Il along with other candidates running for local and state level offices. Jason Peterson spoke about running for a County Board seat for District 1. What he said was probably the two most important words that could be said, “common sense.” In the last two years, hundreds, if not thousands, of eyes have been opened to see how politics has torn not only our country but our own state apart. Peterson is right about common sense. I took his words to heart as I believe that it’s “common sense” to replace those who are in office as they have proven what they will not do.
Every school day I walk into my classroom and wonder whose life I am able to change today. To me, it does not have to be a big change; but changing the life of one student makes my job worthwhile. I am passionate about my job and do slightly become offensive when others begin to degrade what educators do. Our jobs might not be physical but the mental aspect of teaching weights heavily on us even at home. While many do not bring their work home everyday, teachers do as we continue to hope that our kids are safe once they leave the building. As the Grundy / Kendall County Regional Superintendent of Schools, my plan is that teachers would not have to carry this burden home with them each and every day. I want to make sure the schools are safe for students to learn and be themselves without forced indoctrination. Kids in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade are being subjected to words they do not know or understand while the schools allow this to happen.
This happened to my own child during the partial remote year when he was in fifth grade. His music teacher had the class read an article about homosexuality and music. My son understands a little as my husband and I have spoken to him about it. But as parents, that is OUR job to discuss not the school’s. Despite the article being read in class, there were words that my son did not know that could be taken in a defamatory way if he said it to someone. The fact that the article was not discussed or explained upset me more than the article itself.
I have spoken to several groups in the past three months about who I am and why I am running. First and foremost, it’s about being a mother. It’s not too late to change the system or fix it. I still believe in education and that it can be saved. But I cannot do it without your help. It’s time that we make a change. In 9 months, I was able, with the help of other parents, to change several wrongful acts in one school district.
I need you on the front line with me! I want to be your voice.
