April 25, 2022 Koppers Campaign Newsletter
Kristen Koppers for Regional Superintendent of Schools
This past Saturday I was able to meet a lot of people at the Oswego Hometown Expo that was held at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. Many of the parents and stakeholders are concerned as they want to be a part of the change in education. Within the next year, schools boards across the state will have vacancies on the board as 3 or 4 seats will be available for election or re-election. I encourage all who want to see the change to run for a seat.
I was able to grab a picture with James “Jim” Marter, Candidate for Congress in the 14th District as the day came to a close.
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week (May 2 - 6). Recently, many teachers have been scrutinized by parents because of the Governor’s invalid mandates and the ridiculous bills that are passed through the House and the Senate by the current legislators. But not all teachers believe in vaccinations, masking of children, CRT, or the National Sex Education Bill. There are teachers who continue to fight against these “rules” to ensure students are receiving the best possible education. We cannot blame all teachers for the ones who go against the rights of the children.
As an educator, there are many “roles” that we have throughout the school year. While some believe that we only teach, that is not the case. I have been a mom to many students, I have been the disciplinarian, the believer, the tutor, the nurse, the one that students talk to when they feel there is no one else who will listen, and then a teacher. Yet, I have not complained about my job as a teacher. If you listen carefully, teachers do not complain about the students. In fact, the students are not the problem in our eyes. The problem is that those who decide what should be taught and how have either never been in a classroom before or have been out of the classroom for so long that they forgot what it’s like.
This past weekend I was invited to one of my old student’s wedding reception. This student graduated four years ago. I cannot say this was the only time that I was invited. In fact, in the last few years, I have been invited to graduation parties, three weddings, a quinceanera, and an engagement party. But it’s not the students that are just inviting their past teacher, it’s the parents who want to share these moments.
As Teacher Appreciation Week comes around, please remember those who fought and are still fighting for your children as they continue to teach for the next few weeks.
